Call To Action: Tobacco Use and Food Insecurity
In NB, the impact of being a current daily smoker doubles the likelihood of being food insecure.
The NBATC utilized the research results from the UNB study (in partnership with the Department of Social Development) on Tobacco Use and Food Insecurity in New Brunswick to create a video outlining the connection between tobacco use and food insecurity and how NB’s Tobacco-Free Living Strategy can support the work of stakeholders who work with these populations. This project is ongoing and will help to educate and bring awareness to these populations who have higher-than-average tobacco use rates. The video itself aims to promote cessation as a method of improving food insecurity and that addressing food insecurity issues for these populations will in turn, positively affect cessation outcomes promoting overall well-being.
Community Food Action Grants
Did you know that individuals who experience food insecurity are two times more food insecure if they smoke daily? The NBATC wants to bring your attention to programs that support greater food security in New Brunswick.
The Community Food Action Program or CFA grant program can provide up to $5,000 to support community-led solutions to help improve healthy eating in New Brunswick by creating greater food security at the community level. Typical actions that are funded through this program include community gardens, community kitchens, bulk buying clubs, farmer’s markets, and food related education programs.
To be considered for funding your initiative must contribute to the three goals of the Community Food Action Program:
- Increase access to healthy food
- Increase food knowledge and skills
- Strengthen your community’s ability to create greater food security for all
Important to note: Proposed projects and initiatives must be able to follow public health requirements during COVID-19.

World No Tobacco Day 2023: Grow food not tobacco
Tobacco growing harms our health, the health of farmers and the planet’s health. The tobacco industry interferes with attempts to substitute tobacco growing, contributing to the global food crisis.
This campaign encourages governments to end tobacco growing subsidies and use the savings to support farmers to switch to more sustainable crops that improve food security and nutrition.
Campaign objectives
- Mobilize governments to end subsidies on tobacco growing and use of savings for crop substitution programmes that support farmers to switch and improve food security and nutrition.
- Raise awareness in tobacco farming communities about the benefits of moving away from tobacco and growing sustainable crops;
- Support efforts to combat desertification and environmental degradation by decreasing tobacco farming;
- Expose industry efforts to obstruct sustainable livelihoods work.
The key measure of campaign success would be the number of governments that pledge to end subsidies on tobacco growing.
