Study finds dramatic 74% increase in vaping among youth in Canada

A study published in the British Medical Journal has found a dramatic 74% increase in vaping among youth aged 16-19 in Canada from Aug/Sept 2017 to Aug/Sept 2018, with vaping increasing from 8.4% to 14.6% in the past 30 days.

Bill S-5 was adopted May 23, 2018 and legalized e-cigarettes with nicotine, which was followed by the major tobacco companies and Juul (now an affiliate of Philip Morris/Altria) entering the e-cigarette market in Canada.

The study also found an increase in current smoking among youth from 10.7% to 15.5%, a 45% increase.

The lead author is David Hammond of the University of Waterloo.
