National Non Smoking Week: New Brunswick Anti-Tobacco Coalition Encourages New Brunswickers to Get Informed and Promote Tobacco-Free Lifestyles in their Families and Communities.

NEW BRUNSWICK, MONDAY, JANUARY 19, 2015 - January 18-24, 2015 marks National Non-Smoking Week, an opportunity to renew our collective efforts to reduce tobacco use and make our province a healthier place to live, work and play. It is also an opportunity to highlight the fact that tobacco remains a major health concern in New Brunswick.

Smoking rates in New Brunswick remain among the highest in the country. In recognition of National Non-Smoking Week, the New Brunswick Anti-Tobacco Coalition (NBATC) encourages all New Brunswickers to become informed and promote tobacco-free lifestyles in their families and communities.

“To mark National Non-Smoking Week, we are proud to launch our new Making My Outdoor Event Smoke-Free guide, which is designed to help communities organize and promote smoke-free events,” said Christy Bigney, NBATC Coordinator. “While outdoor events provide a wonderful opportunity for community activity and engagement, many New Brunswickers don’t want to breathe in second-hand tobacco smoke. Creating a smoke-free outdoor event protects people, especially children, from exposure to dangerous tobacco smoke.”

Many additional tools are provided in addition to the guide, such as downloadable logos, signs and even social media messaging that can be used to promote smoke-free events. The guide and additional resources can be accessed at http://nbatc.ca/en/index.php?page=making-my-event-smoke-free.

The New Brunswick Anti-Tobacco Coalition works with stakeholders to change attitudes and behaviours towards tobacco products, build support for anti-tobacco initiatives and reduce smoking rates in the province. Info: www.nbatc.ca.
