June 1

Parks and Trails Day is celebrated every year throughout New Brunswick on the first weekend in June. This province-wide event is an opportunity to promote healthy, active living in your community while celebrating the many incredible outdoor spaces in our province. Download a free Parks & Trails Day Planning Kit for ideas and register your community event. The NBATC, of course, encourages you to make sure your outdoor event is smoke-free and promoted as such.

The legalization of cannabis in Canada, as well as the increasing popularity of vapour products, pose new challenges regarding the promotion and respect of wellness-supporting tobacco and smoke-free environments. The New Brunswick Anti-Tobacco Coalition’s (NBATC) Making My Outdoor Event Smoke-Free guide has been recently revised and relaunched to reflect these new challenges.

As per New Brunswick’s Smoke-Free Places Act, smoking as well as vaping – whether that be tobacco, cannabis, e-juices, or any other substance – is prohibited on all trails, beaches, playgrounds, sports fields (including the spectators stand), in parks and other public spaces. The NBATC’s Making My Outdoor Event Smoke-Free guide now includes updated messaging, signs and other tools that address both smoking and vaping – of all substances – in public outdoor spaces.

Outdoor events provide a wonderful opportunity for community activity and engagement. Most New Brunswickers don’t want to breathe in second-hand smoke. Ultimately, we all want opportunities to live, work and play in healthier communities. Ensuring that your Parks & Trails Day event is smoke-free is a great way to contribute!
